" I just wanted to share a story about an experience that I just had. My daughter was recently injured in a skateboarding accident. It was not life threatening, but it required x-rays in the ER, followed by a visit to an orthopeidic center. From that visit, we learned that an MRI was needed.
Just a couple of weeks ago, my husband came home and explained that I should call a particular number for a program called Savon whenever I was presented with the need for an MRI, Mammogram or other like service. At the time, to be honest, I thought it sounded like a bit of a hassle and doubted that I would ever bother. He asked me to put my medical card into the provided envelope so I'd have the number anyway.
Back to the Orthopeidic service.... They were calling the insurance company for authorization and moving us through the process pretty quickly, but on a whim, I called the number and let them know what was going on. In a matter of seconds - literally seconds, the woman on the other end told me that this facility charges $2,000 for an MRI. She then gave me 2 other prices in the NH northcountry(where we were at the time). They were as much as $700 cheaper! I was astounded by the difference. I am actually from southern NH so after thinking about it a bit, called her back and asked for prices in the southern part of the state. Now I was really blown away! One location was quoted at $580 and another was quoted at $270. What? I just couldn't believe it. I thought it must be some kind of MRI knockoff. After confirming with a local knee speciallist that the quality was no different, you can just imagine where we went for the MRI. Even though the first location had already been authorized, we simply cancelled the appointment and had our doctor call the new place to make our appointment.
I'm all for keeping the health costs down and I think that being able to comparison shop will certainly help us to accomplish that.
