5 Resources for NH Seniors Shopping for Medicare Insurance Coverage

8/3/2024

Article by Stephen Donohue, NH Medicare Agent

When a senior is looking to learn more about Medicare plans here in the Granite State, they are OFTEN directed to National Insurance brokerages that don’t fully understand the unique dynamics of the NH Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement market place.

Here are some valuable resources and tips for New Hampshire seniors seeking information about NH Medicare plans:
  1. NH Insurance Department Medicare Supplement Dashboard: Visit the NH Insurance Department’s Medicare Supplement Dashboard to explore costs for different Medicare Supplement Plans offered by 20 insurers in NH. Simply enter your age, and the dashboard will provide detailed information.
  2. ServiceLink: ServiceLink is a non-profit organization with locations throughout NH. They offer free and confidential services to people of all ages and abilities. ServiceLink’s goal is to help older adults and individuals with disabilities access long-term supports and services, enabling them to live independently. For more information, visit the ServiceLink website.
  3. Local Senior Centers: Check with your local Senior Center. Many of them host educational events where experts provide seminars on different Medicare coverage options.
  4. Medicare.gov Plan Finder: Use the Medicare.gov Plan Finder by entering your zip code and basic information. It will provide comprehensive details about Medicare plans, including coverage options and enrollment guidelines.
  5. Local Medicare Agent: Consider reaching out to a local Medicare agent. Atlantic Insurance & Benefit Company, for instance, has been assisting seniors since 2010. Using a Medicare broker doesn’t cost extra and can help you find the right Medicare Supplement or Advantage Plan.

Remember that understanding your options and choosing the right plan is essential. Feel free to explore these resources to make informed decisions about your NH Medicare coverage!

  4. Overall Rating: ConsumersAdvocate rates Safeco at 4.2 out of 5 (Excellent), emphasizing its creditworthiness, standard coverages, additional plans, and limited discounts4.
Remember, individual experiences may vary, so consider your specific needs when evaluating Safeco as a home insurance option.  Safeco offers attractive homeowners insurance coverage in Nashua, NH that can be tailored to your needs and budget. Here are some key features:
  1. Dwelling Coverage: Safeco’s dwelling coverage protects your home against losses from events like fire, lightning, windstorms, hail, theft, and vandalism.

It typically includes protection against a wide range of perils, such as fire, theft, and natural disasters. HO5 policies also cover personal property on an open-perils basis, meaning it protects against all risks except those specifically excluded.
  • Homeowners HO3: The HO3 policy is the most common type of homeowners insurance. It covers your dwelling (structure), personal property (contents), and liability. Unlike HO5, it provides coverage for personal property on a named-perils basis, meaning it lists specific risks that are covered.
  • Renters Policy: Designed for renters, this policy covers personal belongings (furniture, electronics, clothing) against perils like fire, theft, and vandalism. It also includes liability coverage in case someone gets injured in your rented space.
  • Condo HO6: Condo insurance is tailored for condominium owners. It covers your personal property, interior improvements, and liability. The condo association’s master policy usually covers the building structure and common areas.
  • Landlord Policies: These policies are for property owners who rent out their homes or apartments. Landlord insurance covers the dwelling, liability, and loss of rental income due to covered perils. It’s essential for protecting your investment property.
In addition to these types of NH Home insurance, Safeco has 4 different levels of protection
  1. Essential
  2. New Quality Plus
  3. Optimum
  4. Premier

NH Medicare Supplement Plan G 2024- 7 reasons why Plan G is such a good value!

Medicare Supplement Plan G in New Hampshire: A Comprehensive Guide

Over the past several years, Medicare Supplement Plan G has gained significant popularity among seniors in New Hampshire. As an agency specializing in NH Medigap plans, we’ve observed a shift towards Plan G as the preferred choice for many residents. Let’s explore the reasons behind its appeal:
  1. Broad Access to Care:  Medicare Supplement Plans allow you to visit any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare. This flexibility is especially convenient for snowbirds and frequent travelers.
  2. Similar Coverage to Plan F: Plan G provides coverage similar to Plan F, including hospital stays, nursing home care, and other essential services. The primary difference is that Plan G does not cover the Part B deductible (currently $240).
  3. Cost Savings: NH Plan G offers substantial monthly premium savings compared to Plan F. For instance:
    • Plan G, on the other hand, costs only $170.44 per month—resulting in savings of $62.88 per month or $754.56 annually. These savings often outweigh the Part B deductible expense.
    • Anthem’s Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan F costs $233.22 per month for a 65-year-old male.
  4. Coverage of Excess Charges: Like Plan F, Plan G covers excess charges. Having this protection provides peace of mind, especially for conservative shoppers.
  5. More Favorable Long-Term Pricing: Plan G’s advantage lies in its long-term pricing stability. While only Medicare enrollees who were enrolled prior to 2020 can purchase Plan F, Plan G remains available for new enrollees. This availability may lead to more stable rates over time and lower predicted claims costs per person.
  6. Long-Term Stability: Many seniors in their 70s have maintained the same Medicare Supplement plan for years. Plan G’s reliability makes it an excellent long-term solution.
  7. Foreign Travel Benefits: NH Plan G includes up to $50,000 in foreign travel benefits, ensuring coverage even when traveling abroad.

Almost 70% of Americans are evaluating their current insurance policies and looking for lower rates according to a survey from Trusted Choice

1/10/2024

With the new year well under way, many are seeing their insurance policies renewing at a higher rate in 2024. From Auto to Homeowners insurance policies; everyone can feel the effects of inflation and rising costs.

According to a recent survey from Trusted Choice, 69.3% of American insurance policy owners have begun to review their policies with 45.8% indicating a rise in premiums being the cause. Other findings in the study include 46.6% considering selecting plans with higher deductibles to lower premium costs, 83% would switch insurance companies for more savings, and 22% are thinking about dropping their policies (going uninsured) and leaving insurance out of the equation entirely.

The reasons for elevated insurance premiums stem from unprecedented losses due to rising inflation, natural disasters, reinsurance costs, etc. Fortunately, many Americans are finding success buying insurance policies, switching plans, and finding savings with insurance agents. As stated in the survey; 56.3% of Americans prefer to approach their insurance business with insurance agents, while 36.3% buy insurance through an insurance companies' website separately.

With the current market of high insurance renewal rates, we here at Atlantic Insurance & Benefit Co. would be so happy to help find the best deal with the most savings for you.

Is your Auto or Home insurance policy renewal increasing by more than $100?

Please give us a call at (603) 882-2909, send us an email, or fill out our online form(s) for your Auto and Home insurance quotes today!

NH Medicare Supplement Plans 2022

3/10/2022

by Stephen Donohue NH Medicare Supplement insurance agent                                                    603-882-2909

Each year the NH Insurance Department releases a report called New Hampshire's Guide to Medicare Supplement Insurance. This report shows consumers the different insurers offering Medigap coverage here in the Granite State, and also offers some helpful tips on what to look for when buying a Medicare Supplement policy.

Here are some quick updates for 2022:
  • There are 19 insurers offering NH Medicare Supplement Plans in 2022 (all offer the popular PLAN G)
  • The lowest rates for PLAN G for Female age 65  is $139.50 MONTH (UnitedHealthcare®)
  • The lowest rates for PLAN G for Male age 65 is $156.50 month (UnitedHealthcare®)

One of the reasons that we think this is a helpful tool for seniors in NH is because the RATES VARY significantly by insurer. (For example a PLAN G age 67 Male can be as low as 171 with UnitedHealthcare® and as high as $366 with LOYAL AMERICAN LIFE.)

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE NH GUIDE TO MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT- or you can visit the NH Insurance Department webpage HERE.

NEW for 2022- Interactive Medicare Supplement Quoting Tool
This year the NH insurance Department also has created an interactive 2022 Medicare Supplement Rate Dashboard where you can visit to COMPARE the rates for the VARIOUS insurers offering NH Medigap plans on a side by side basis. It is really neat and simple, just enter your gender, age and which plan you want (example NH Medigap Plan F, G or N) and it will show the rates for the 17 insurers selling supplement plans in NH.

NOTE- this quoting tool does NOT show the different discounts that are offered like:
  • EFT
  • Household (Spouse)
  • Annual Payment

It also does not show which plans have pre-existing conditions, or the kind of medical underwriting questions that insurers may ask.

Here at Atlantic Insurance & Benefit Company we work with many of the leading NH Medigap Insurers to offer a broad selection of plans. We learn about what you need and help you pick the plan that is best for you. We have also prepared our OWN detailed review of 5 NH Medicare Supplement Insurance companies.

If you would like some help evaluating the NH Medicare Insurance market, want a quote with the various discounts you might qualify for, or have questions please give us a call at 603-882-2909 ext. 3.

NH Condo Insurance is Unique - 5 ideas to make sure your NH or MA Condominium Home Insurance fits your needs

4/19/2021

Picture
NH Condo Insurance
Why do you need Condominium Insurance?
In a sentence you need Condo insurance to protect what your HOA does NOT COVER.  (NH Condo insurance is also called a NH HO-6 Insurance).

Condominium insurance is unique. Your NH HO-6 condo insurance policy covers your personal property and liability, as well as any additions, alterations and improvements you make to your unit that are your responsibility based on the condo association agreement.

As you might expect with any kind of insurance there are options for you to consider- here are 5 things that we suggest you consider when buying NH CONDO (NH HO-6) insurance coverage:
  1. Optional loss assessment coverage is  available to protect you against certain assessments that may be levied by the association.
  2. Additional Living Expenses- You would be compensated for additional living expenses incurred should you need to vacate your condo after a covered loss.
  3. Personal Property Enhancements Condo insurance provides coverage for your personal property and much more. For a few more dollars, you can elect to carry Full Value Personal Property which ensures that you are reimbursed full replacement value without regard for depreciation after a covered loss.
  4. Additional Building/Dwelling Coverage  If you have upgraded cabinets or put in hardwood floors, condo building item coverage protects these investments.
  5. Computer & Smartphone Provides additional protection, including higher limits and additional covered causes of loss for computers, peripheral devices, and software.

Let Atlantic Insurance & Benefit Company help you find the right amount of Condominium home insurance coverage to suit your insurance needs in NH and Massachusetts  Call us today at 603-882-2909.

Be sure to consult your HOA agreement to determine what the Association policy covers and what you are responsible for.  If common areas are damaged, your condo association may levy assessments against all the owners to pay the deductible on their association policy.

Various limits of loss assessment coverage are available. Be sure to consult the HOA agreement to determine the potential for such assessments. Atlantic Insurance & Benefit Company can help you determine your coverage needs to make sure you’re properly covered. Call us at 603-882-2909 or request a NH Condo Insurance quote online here. Quotes are secure and fast- with no high pressure sales. We are here to help if you need us.

Get Ready for Medicare.. See 7 Helpful Tools and Ideas for NH Seniors!

7/15/2020

Picture
by Stephen Donohue NH Medicare Insurance Specialist

If you are just getting started with Medicare- and you are looking for some information, here are 7 things that you can do:

  1. Visit the MyMedicareMatters.org website.   This website is helpful for new seniors (and also people who have been on Medicare for a while). It is sponsored by the National Council on Aging and has some great tools. My favorite page on this site is the  MEDICARE CHECKLIST that outlines steps you should take 6 months, 4 months, and 3 months prior to your 65th Birthday.  (Here is a PDF of the MEDICARE CHECKLIST if you want to download it!)
  2. Get your Annual Physical Exam- BEFORE you are enrolled with Medicare!  If you are on an employer sponsored plan - it is likely that the preventive care benefit you have NOW is RICHER THAN  preventive care covered by MEDICARE.  It is important to know that while Medicare DOES COVER PREVENTIVE CARE, the Medicare preventive care benefits are not as comprehensive. See Medicare's List of Preventive Care covered items here.
  3. Consider your Options- Most seniors when initially are they are eligible for Medicare have 3 choices, If you need help comparing options, please give me a call 603-882-2909 I am happy to help!
    1. Still working? The best decision for someone who is currently working, or covered on a spouse's employer benefits is OFTEN  to REMAIN on the employer sponsored plan if the costs per paycheck and out of pocket costs are reasonable.  So most of our clients will KEEP their CURRENT EMPLOYER HEALTH PLAN  and defer electing Medicare Part B (Most people do take A because it's free!)
    2. Original Medicare A & B, Plus a Part D RX plan PLUS a Medicare Supplement
    3. Medicare Advantage
  4. Read the Medicare & You 2020 Handbook-  No one is asking you to memorize it!  But a review of it will help you better understand Medicare. You are able to read it online,  order one to be mailed,  or download the pdf here.
  5. Attend a Seminar- Check your local senior centers, or libraries. Insurance brokers, insurance companies and other organizations offer no pressure Medicare Education seminars often.
  6. Visit your Insurance Department Website Here in NH, the Insurance Department has a great publication called New Hampshire’s Guide to Medicare Supplement Insurance . It lists the monthly premiums for all the NH 2020 Guide 2020-nh-guide_to_medicare-supplement-rates-dated_01.23.2020.pdfto MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT PLANS offered by 19 different insurance companies.
  7. Meet with a Medicare Insurance Specialist- the favorite part of my job is meeting with seniors and helping them plan for Medicare. Often people are overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices, but after getting to know your situation, we are often able to help you narrow it down,  make your options easier to understand and more manageable.
